Sometimes, the biggest step is simply deciding to try.

A Year 10 student from Phorms Berlin Mitte did so and is now one of only 20 finalists in the Road to Harvard Competition.

The program gives students in Germany the chance to win support for a two-week Harvard Summer School Pre-College Program in 2027.

To apply, students submit a motivation letter in English. They reflect on achievements as well as on personal challenges, mistakes and what they have learned from them.

For our student, that was the most challenging part of the application. At the same time, the process helped him understand himself better, especially when reflecting on his achievements and setbacks.

When he found out he had been selected as one of the finalists, his reaction was honest:

“I was really surprised and pleased. But I have to be realistic as I am facing tough competition.”

On 13 June 2026, the finalists will take part in the final stage of the competition.

At our schools we encourage students to take part in opportunities like this because they open up perspectives beyond the classroom. They help young people challenge themselves, reflect on their own path and gain confidence in what they can contribute. Experiences like this are valuable because they help students learn more about themselves along the way, regardless of where they may lead.

If selected, our Year 10 student from Phorms Berlin Mitte would be especially interested in exploring courses in economics.

His message to his classmates?

“I would definitely encourage other students to give it a try as it’s always good to challenge yourself.”

We wish our student every success for the final stage and are excited to see where this journey takes him.
