The five sences of 1GO

Our first big Topic unit in Year 1 was “The Five senses”.
In the course of the last weeks our Year 1 children were given the necessary tools to experiment with each of their five senses, thus becoming slowly familiarised with some key vocabulary related to their senses of sight, touch, taste, hearing and smell while having lots of fun. During the week dedicated to the sense of sight, for instance, our children were asked to draw and colour their own eyes with the help of a mirror and those of their best friends paying attention to the different parts of the eye, like the iris, pupil, eyebrow or eyelash. Similarly, during the week dedicated to the sense of taste we organised a series of tasting games that allowed them to grasp some crucial related terms, such as “salty”, “sweet” or “sour”, while having a good laugh. But very probably the children’s favourite highlight of the Topic unit was when they were blindfolded and asked to guess which friend was sitting in front of them just by means of using their sense of touch. It was definitely a very hands-on unit!
