On Monday, the 5th of December, the Gymnasium students were involved in several different projects around the city of Berlin for the school's annual Social Day. The students of each class have written a brief overview of their activities, which you can read below.
Klasse 7a
Our class went to the Steglitzer Park to collect rubbish. So, we went there with the 285 (Bus). Then we walked 10 minutes to the park. After that, we all got our garbage bags, put on gloves and went off. We divided into groups of four and walked thorough the park. After about an hour we arrived at a playground, we looked for garbage but found nothing, so Mr. Kiely decided to take a class photo. Then we walked around more but it got very cold so Mr. Kiely had a brilliant Idea. The idea was to go to a café and drink hot chocolate and that's what we did. It was very delicious. When we all finished, we walked back to the park and worked for 30 more minutes. After that we went to eat lunch. Some of us ate Döner, Currywurst or our own lunch. Finally, when we were finished, some of us went to school and the others drove home alone.
Klasse 8
Am 05.12.22 hat Social Day stattgefunden. Wir haben uns um 10:30 getroffen und die Stadtmission im Zentrum am Zoo besucht, wo wir eine Führung und einen Workshop über das Thema Lernwelt Armut & Obdachlosigkeit gemacht haben.
Wir haben über die folgenden Fragen diskutiert: Warum müssen in einem so reichen Land wie Deutschland Menschen auf der Straße leben?“Wie kann ich dazu beitragen, diese Situation zu verändern?“ Wie kann ich in meinem persönlichen Umfeld Obdachlosigkeit vorbeugen?
Am Ende hatten wir noch einen Blick auf die Arbeit in der gegenüberliegenden Bahnhofsmission/ Hygienecenter und haben uns die aktuelle Ausstellung angeschaut.

Klasse 9a
Am Social Day haben wir als Klasse Samaritans Purse in Lankwitz besucht. Die Samariter helfen Opfern von Krieg, Armut, Naturkatastrophen und religiöser Verfolgung. Dort werden Spenden wie Anziehsachen, Spielsachen etc. eingesammelt, überprüft und verpackt. Viele Menschen auch von außerhalb Berlins bereiten eine Schuhbox vor, verpackt in Geschenkpapier mit ganz vielen Sachen, die ein Kind sich zu Weihnachten wünschen würde. Die Boxen wurden dann überprüft nach Sachen, die nicht reindürfen. Wir haben als Klasse geholfen, die Boxen zu checken und zu sortieren, da sie danach abgeklebt werden und in große Kartons mit verschiedenen Kategorien wie Jungs und Mädchen und verschiedenen Altersgruppen verpackt werden. Dann besuchen die Samariter verschiedene Dörfer rund um die Welt und machen bedürftigen Kindern eine Freude mit großartigen Geschenken zur Weihnachtszeit.
Klasse 10
Der Social Day der Klasse 10 am 5. Dezember beschäftigte sich grob gesagt mit dem Thema Obdachlosigkeit. Wir haben uns dazu entschieden, vor dem Social Day einen Bake-Sale zu machen mit der Intention Geld für eine wohltätige Spende für Obdachlose bzw. Organisationen, die sich damit beschäftigen, zu sammeln. Neben dem Geld, was wir eingenommen hatten um etwas Gutes zu tun, wollten wir erfahren, wie oder warum eine Person obdachlos geworden ist, und genau das haben wir am Social Day gemacht. Wir haben uns mit dem Leiter einer kleinen Organisation für Obdachlose und einem seiner Schützlinge getroffen, um mehr zu erfahren. Neben der Info wie oder warum der Obdachlose obdachlos geworden ist, haben wir erfahren, womit er seine Zeit verbringt, wie er sein Geld verdient und wie er lebt.
Der Obdachlose hat uns so viele Fragen beantwortet wie wir Fragen hatten, ohne unsere Neugier zu verurteilen. Es war eine sehr wertvolle Erfahrung, da man selten die Gelegenheit dazu bekommt mit einem Obdachlosen so ausführlich über das Ganze zu sprechen.

Klasse 11.1
Am 5. November fand der alljährliche Social Day unserer Schule statt. Unsere Klasse, die 11.1, hatte das große Glück, mit Frau Basbug unseren Social Day zu verbringen. Frau Basbug setzt sich vorbildlich für die Obdachlosengemeinde am Bahnhof Zoo ein. Jeden Montag stellt sie ihre Tische mit Essen und warmen Getränken in der Jesbenstraße Ecke Hertzallee auf und verteilt diese Lebensmittel mit viel Liebe an die Bedürftigen. An diesem Montag durften wir sie dabei unterstützen. Wir haben alle viele Lebensmittel wie Bananen, Mandarinen, Sandwiches, Suppe und auch weihnachtliche Süßigkeiten mitgebracht. Es war eine großartige Erfahrung den Bedürftigen helfen zu dürfen und es hat uns auch als Klasse näher zusammengebracht. Jeder war danach glücklich geholfen zu haben, aber auch nachdenklich. Man reflektiert nach so einer Erfahrung, was wirklich wichtig ist im Leben. Brauchen wir all diese materiellen Dinge? Besonders in der Weihnachtszeit zeigt sich unsere materielle Kultur. Das neuste Handy und die teuersten Marken stehen auf den meisten Wunschlisten. Dabei sollten wir mit diesem Geld oder Teilen von diesem Geld lieber den Bedürftigen helfen. Von ihnen kriegt man nämlich etwas viel, viel Wertvolleres zurück: Dankbarkeit! Vielen Dank Frau Basbug für diese Chance unsere sozialen Fähigkeiten zu stärken.
Klasse 11.2
At the “Bahnhofsmission bei Berlin Hauptbahnhof“
On the 5th of December, the Phorms Berlin Süd Gymnasium had their yearly Social Day. Its purpose is for students to learn about social situations and help in a way they can. We, the Year 11.2 students, decided to help the homeless in Berlin and to learn about their lifestyle. The father of one of our classmates helps at the “Bahnhofsmission” at Berlin Central Station and took the generous time to educate us there. In the days leading up to we collected money through a bake sale at our school, to donate there. We met up at Washington Platz at 9:15 and were guided to the rooms of the organization. There, in groups of four people, we were guided through the different stations of the Bahnhofsmission, for example the kitchen, the “quiet-room,” the toilets, the social room where the Homeless sat together to eat, drink, and socialize, and the storage room. We learned how much money a homeless person earns of the streets; how much coffee is required daily and more specific information about the purpose and history of the Bahnhofsmission. They also take care of travellers, of older people that need help around the station, assist handicapped individuals to board trains etc. We also learned that most of the homeless people do not see themselves in their own home again in the future, as they simply do not want a different life, which was a shocking information for us. Finally, we got a tour of the Berlin Central Station and gave our donation to the Chef of the organisation, who told us what they will use the money for (coffee, food, blankets etc.). Overall, we got to see what the Bahnhofsmission does, why they were founded, how important they are and gained information on how the homeless´ day looks like, and are incredibly grateful for the effort that was taken for us.
Klasse 12
Today our class met at the Hauptbahnhof in Berlin. After that we went to an organization which is called the Berliner Stadtmission. There we met Frau Rogasch, who is one of the people taking care of this organization, who gave us information about her job and what their aim is while doing this. The organization is there to help homeless people and to give them an opportunity to stay there for one night, where they can shower, eat and sleep in a safe location. By visiting the rooms within the Stadtmission, it gave us time to think about how lucky we are as individuals, when others are not so fortunate.
Frau Rogasch spoke about the support which they receive from the Berlin government, where they organise small buses for homeless people, can get treated while they live on the streets. They give the homeless various supplies such as gloves or blankets, due to the fact that the weather in Berlin is very cold. The support staff on these buses discuss the various Stadtmission locations as they can have access to medical treatment or to stay there for one night to get some food and a shower. All in all, it was great that we had the opportunity to do this trip to see the circumstances which some people find themselves.
